Mystery of Cabot Circus unit's future after closure of Miss Selfridge, Burton and Dorothy Perkins

It's no secret that high streets up and down the country are finding it tough, highlighted by the number of shops which have closed since 2000.

Nobody likes seeing empty retail units in city centres but there are quite a few in Bristol, as there are in many other major UK cities.

Arguably the most prominent right now is the vast space left behind following the departure of three Arcadia Group stores last month.

Burton, Miss Selfridge and Dorothy Perkins all closed in August following the collapse of the multinational retail company, which is owned by Sir Phillip Green and also includes Evans, Wallis, Topshop and Topman.

The unit is located at the main entrance to Cabot Circus, where The Horsefair meets Penn Street, meaning it can be seen from far and wide.

But it is unclear whether or not there is a replacement lined up for it.

Announcing the departure of the unit back in July, a spokesperson for Cabot Circus said: "Following the announcement about Arcadia Group’s proposed restructuring, we can confirm that the unit with Burton, Dorothy Perkins and Miss Selfridge will be closing in August.

"We’re always looking for ways to make the mix of brands at Cabot Circus even better, and we look forward to welcoming something new to the unit soon."

However, Bristol Live contacted the shopping centre on Thursday last week (September 5) to ask if there have been any developments but has not received a reply.

Given the prominence of the unit, the shopping centre will surely be doing all it can behind the scenes to replace the trio of Arcadia brands and shoppers will be eagerly awaiting an announcement.

We will bring you the latest on the space as and when we hear it.
