Mystery noise that baffled Glasgow late last night was a ship distress signal from the Clyde

An eerie sound could be heard from the River Clyde late last night – and it's safe to say many Glaswegians were spooked.

The bizarre noise was described as sounding like "a cross between a ship's horn and someone playing bass" and "indie French electro" – and could be heard around the west end, as far as Maryhill and Bearsden.

In true 2020 form, some on Twitter joked they thought the noise was "The Rapture", the chilling sirens from The Purge or an alien invasion.

The truth is slightly less dramatic: it was a ship's faulty alarm system sending out a distress signal.

The Greenock Coastguard said: "We can confirm a vessel in the Clydebank/Erskine area had a malfunctioning distress system resulting in distress horns being activated around 00:30.

"Our operations centre have spoken with the vessel in question and can confirm she is safely alongside and in no distress."
