Mystery multi-millionaires: Townsville locals urged to check their lotto tickets

Townsville residents are being urged to check their lotto tickets after the winning $60 million ticket was sold in the suburb of Kirwan in the north Queensland city.

A 10-person syndicate held the division-one winning entry, with each person securing a $6 million Powerball jackpot.

Matt Hart from the Lott said some members of the syndicate were not registered.

"The 10 members don't know each other. They just popped in and grabbed this syndicate share," he said.

Mr Hart had the job of telling those registered that they had won.

"There was a fair few expletives, it's fair to say," he said.

Mr Hart said one man had been watching the football when he got the call.

"He was probably a little bit annoyed that I was calling but I made good with the $6 million prize.

"He did say he probably wasn't going to sleep very well last night but [that] he could live with that.

"Another [winner] said she was the happiest person in the world.

Two others I spoke to are pretty much planning to retire today," he said.

A Kirwan couple took a more low-key approach, sitting down for a nice scotch while contemplating what to do with their newfound fortune.

Yet to meet a winner

The winning ticket was sold at the Nextra newsagency in the Willows shopping centre.

Shop assistant Britney Brittain said the news had been met with quite a flurry.

Ms Brittain said while they had not met any of the winners yet, most customers were just happy the prize had been won locally.

Ms Brittain said after enduring the past three days in lockdown, due to a COVID-19 outbreak, it was wonderful to end the week on a high.

"It's definitely the light at the end of the tunnel, it's the … positive that we needed," she said.
