Four new cases of COVID-19 have been recorded in Mildura, taking the total to five active cases after a stint of relative freedom from the virus for the north-western Victoria city.

COVID-19 response commander Jeroen Weimar said three of the cases were close contacts of each other with cross-border associations and one case was under investigation.

The cases come after a person tested positive at the Mildura Law Courts on Tuesday, October 5.

The ABC understands the person was tested after presenting to the court with COVID-like symptoms.

On Sunday, a Merbein resident tested positive to COVID and has since been receiving at-home hospital care.

Unlinked cases 'a worry'

Mildura Base Public Hospital CEO Terry Welch told ABC radio two of the new cases were of particular concern for the community.

"The fact that these cases are not linked is what is worrying us the most," Mr Welch said.

"The reality is COVID is in our community and we have to take that extremely seriously."

One active case of the virus was listed in the Mildura LGA on Sunday, October 3, is a person residing in Merbein.

Three detections of COVID-19 were recorded in Mildura wastewater on September 28, 29, 30.

There are so far no exposure sites reported for Mildura.

There have been 22 cases in Mildura since the pandemic began.
