Mystery lights seen over Glasgow sky 'like something from War of the Worlds'

Glaswegians have been stunned by mystery lights seen in the night sky described as 'like something from War of the Worlds'.

Steph Nixon shared his spectacular snap on Twitter after capturing the bizarre sight from his home in Croftfoot in the south of Glasgow.

As ever, several have suspected UFOs are descending on the city, while others are claiming the rapture is upon us.

However, it seems the colourful lights' appearance can more simply - although less sensationally - be attributed to meteorology.

A number of social media users responding to Steph's photo have confirmed the display as 'light pillars', formed by the reflection of light from small ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere, apparently a common occurrence in various locations across the world.

So, thankfully something far less sinister than we may have expected given the way of the world right now, but nonetheless, certainly a very beautiful scene!

Did you manage to get any photos of the light pillars? Post your pics in the comments or send them to news@glasgowlive.co.uk.
