Mystery lights explained as strange formation flies over Leeds night sky

Star gazers were in for a treat last night as they craned their necks skyward to see a beautiful line of bright lights over Leeds.

There was plenty of chatter online about what the perfectly-aligned pattern of lights were, with some suggesting that it might have even been an alien invasion.

The train of lights appeared briefly above Leeds, Yorkshire and all over the UK at around 10pm for around six minutes and were undoubtedly an incredible sight.

However, it soon transpired that the phenomenon wasn't the arrival of extra-terrestrial life at all. Instead, the mesmerising scene was in fact a trail of Starlink satellites.

The cluster of satellites have been launched into the Earth's orbit by South African entrepreneur Elon Musk, with the Starlink programme aimed at beaming internet signals to remote locations across the world.

The first satellites were launched in May 2019, but the company has since been given approval to fly 12,000 satellites as part of the huge project.

The total number of Starlink satellites could even reach 30,000, so we could see plenty more sights like last night in the coming months and years.

There is even a dedicated website which tells you exactly when you can spot them, with more sightings possible until April 24. For more information, visit findstarlink.com.
