Question: Thanks to feral birds, this lovely European mystery bird is also commonly seen in the southern parts of the UK. This bird has an unusual breeding behaviour -- can you tell me what that is?

response: This is an adult male red-crested pochard, Netta rufina. This duck is unusual because the drake will dive after food and bring it to the female during the breeding season (many male ducks abandon their mates after the eggs have been laid.)

You are invited to review all of the daily mystery birds by going to their dedicated graphic index page.

If you have bird images, video or mp3 files that you'd like to share with a large and (mostly) appreciative audience, feel free to email them to me for consideration.
