Mystery behind traffic chaos in Ayr is solved as Openreach tackle collapsed manhole

A collapsed manhole has been revealed as the reason behind days of traffic misery in Ayr.

Engineers have today been working to fix the problem close to the Whitletts roundabout.

Long delays have been experienced by drivers since the middle of last week when temporary traffic lights were erected between the roundabout and Heathfield retail park.

And police moved yesterday to urge drivers to avoid the area, such was the severity of the problem.

But bosses at Openreach have today confirmed they are now on top of the issue.

A spokesperson for Openreach told Ayrshire Live: “We’re very sorry for any inconvenience caused to road users in the vicinity of Whitletts roundabout.

"Engineers are on site today completing repairs to a damaged manhole – traffic management has been in place since the damage was reported as a safety precaution while a survey was carried out and the work planned in.

"The lights will be removed as soon as possible.”

A spokesperson for the Ayrshire Roads Alliance added: "The work is emergency work being carried out by Openreach to repair a collapsed manhole on the carriageway, which would pose a danger to the travelling public.

"The Ayrshire Roads Alliance has advised BT that the lights need to be manually controlled."
