Mystery as 'strong smell of cat pee' reported across parts of Speke

Residents were left confused over a mysterious smell across parts of Speke this morning.

People have taken to social media today, February 27, to speak of the strong stench which some say, "smells like cat pee."

Other residents have likened the smell to "burning chemicals" and "a peppery smell.

Posting on social media, one man said: "Yeah it's like burning chemicals i'm not far from the Orient (pub).

"It's been a few nights now but that's the worst its been, not as bad now but it's still in the air."

Another resident said: "That’s it - cat pee, I couldn’t think what it was!! It stinks."

Reports of the odour have created a lot of speculation on social media, as people questioned where it could be coming from.

One man, in his 70s, said he believed the "cat pee smell" was coming from the Stanlow Oil Refinery, based in Ellesmere Port.

He said: "As a 71 year old ex resident of Speke, I can tell you as I have in the past, that the cat pee smell you are experiencing is coming from Stanlow Oil Refinery.

"It's been there since I was a child. Just hope for the wind direction to change."

However, another resident questioned whether the smell was in fact coming from a local brewery in Hunts Cross.

Another man said the smell, which he claimed was a topic of conversation "every year" is coming from "the elder flower trees."

A spokesperson from Liverpool City Council said the council had not received any reports of a smell in the area.
