Mystery as Scottish river turns to 'Irn Bru' as water goes orange overnight

A river in Fife has gone viral overnight after locals shared footage online of it having turned orange.

Kinness Burn in St Andrews has left locals baffled after turning to 'Irn Bru' - with one dubbing the river 'Irn Bru Burn'.

Another resident added: "You spill your Irn Bru?"

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) released a statement on Twitter after they were inundated with calls reporting the river's discolouration after Barbara Boyd shared footage of the bright orange water online.

The environment agency wrote: "We'd like to thank members of the public for reporting the pollution incident in the Kinness Burn in St Andrews. We believe the discolouration may be associated with historic mine workings.

"Water from the mine workings contains naturally occurring metals, such as iron, from the mined rocks. When mine water flows into a river, the iron settles on the bed of the river, causing orange staining.

"We're working with the Coal Authority to investigate the source of the pollution."

So there you have it, the cause of the river's discolouration is fortunately more Iron Bru than the famous fizzy drink!
