Mystery as 'penguin' is spotted swimming in Ayrshire harbourside

Residents of Irvine harbourside are in a flap after a 'penguin' was spotted swimming in the sea.

A photo of what appeared to be the world’s most famous flightless bird was sent to the Irvine Herald this afternoon.

Similar images appeared on social media where posters were shocked to see a real-life ‘Pingu’ apparently at home in the water.

On witnesses described seeing the animal - which is usually native to the colder climate of Antarctica - take dips below the surface of the water.

Others felt it was simply a case of a mistaken identity with one person claiming it was in fact a Manx Shearwater bird.

Did you manage to get a picture of the feathered friend?

If so email news@irvineherald.co,uk and we'll repost them on this article.
