Mystery as flight bound for US returns to Edinburgh Airport and is met by fire engines

A flight bound for the US has returned to Edinburgh Airport met by fire engines on the runway.

United Airlines flight UAL39 left the Scottish capital at around 9.40am this morning and was scheduled to arrive in Newark, New Jersey, at around 12.20pm.

However it was seen on the FlightRadar website to be circling the Perthshire area shortly after 11am before returning to Edinburgh before 12pm.

It is understood that the plane was met by fire engines on the runway, however it is currently unclear what the issue was.

It now appears that the flight is due to leave Edinburgh at 1.30pm.

The fire service confirmed that they were called to the airport at 11.38am but weren't required to do anything in the end.

United Airlines have been contacted for comment.
