Mystery as Brit dad vanishes after travelling to Lanzarote nearly two weeks ago

Spanish police are urging locals and holidaymakers to help them find a missing British dad who vanished after travelling to Lanzarote nearly two weeks ago.

In a rare public plea for information, the Civil Guard said they wanted to hear from anyone with any information about 53-year-old Gary Watson Shearer.

The Celtic fan flew to the Canary Island for St Patrick’s Day and was last seen at a pub called Bar 67 in the resort town of Puerto del Carmen on March 16.

Gary, from Renfrew near Glasgow, is known to have type 2 diabetes and is said to be prone to seizures.

Members of his family have flown out to Lanzarote to help search for him after he failed to show up for his flight home a week after his arrival.

The Civil Guard did not refer to the missing man’s illness in their plea for the public’s help in finding him, and referred to him in a short statement as Gary James Watson.

A spokesman for the force on the neighbouring island of Gran Canaria said: “We are seeking the public’s help in discovering the whereabouts of 53-year-old Gary James Watson.

“He was last seen in Puerto del Carmen when he was wearing a green and white Celtic football top, white shorts and white trainers.

“We urge anyone with any piece of information they think could be of interest to us and may help us find Gary to contact us.”

They also put out a description of the missing man, describing him as just over 5ft 2 with grey/black hair and a slight limp.

Gary’s sister Michelle Shearer is among well-wishers and volunteers due to join in a search for the missing Brit starting at noon tomorrow from Bar 67.

His parents Ann and Daniel have also flown to Lanzarote.

Reports say he was spotted leaving the pub after a few drinks and vanished after being stopped from getting into a taxi by the driver.

It was not clear today if the cabbie has been spoken to by police.

Earlier this month a British woman vanished on the Canary island of Tenerife.

Kate Barley, 60, turned up ‘safe and well’ nearly a week after she went missing following an appeal from her husband.
