Mysterious humming noise stopping people in Wirral sleeping

A mysterious humming sound is said to be stopping people in one Wirral town from sleeping.

People living in Bebington have taken to social media to talk about what has been referred to as 'the hum', a mysterious intermittent humming sound for which many theories have been put forward as to what might be causing it.

One person, posting to Facebook last night asked about the sound, prompting plenty of comments from bemused local residents who say the problem has been going on for years.

The woman said: "I live in Brackenwood, what on earth is the damn humming sound going on all night?"

Others responded to say the sound has disturbed their sleep and become something of an urban legend.

One person said: "It's been a mystery for years!

"I've heard it on and off for the 14 years I've lived in Bromborough.

"I read it is from a ship engine or generator at the docks but there are other theories."

Another added that he had been hearing the sound for decades.

He said: "I first heard 'The Hum' in 1971, when I was 13.

"It was always during the night."

The poster referred to a national newspaper story at the time which "concluded it was the power stations" although others said they thought it was from the nearby motorway or from roadworks.

One person said they thought the sound originated in their house.

She said: "I’ve always thought it was the tv in my room."

Another said they thought it was "noise pollution from the docks."

The sound, which is described as a "low humming" has been the subject of discussion before, with some referring to it as the "Wirral hum."

Last year, the ECHO also reported on residents in the Bebington area taking to social media to complain about the humming sound.

It followed complaints a year earlier in the Birkenhead area about a distracting noise which was keeping people awake.

At that time, the local authority said the noise was being caused by a ship on the docks at Cavendish Wharf.

The spokesman said: “We can confirm that officers from the Council are working with a shipping agency to reduce the noise being created by generators on a ship currently berthed at Cavendish Wharf."

However, it is not thought that the long running mystery of the Bebington hum is linked to any particular ships birthed in docks along the Wirral waterway.

Its origins, decades after first being reported remain largely a mystery.
