Mysterious fireball appears to fall from sky above UK town

A doorbell security camera captured the incredible moment a fireball appears to crash down from the sky.

Gary Rogers, 52, said he was lying in bed when he got a notification alert on his phone to say their was movement outside.

Mr Rogers, who lives in Derby, said he checked the footage and was shocked to see a fireball light up the sky on Monday night.

He told Derbyshire Live: “I was sitting in bed about to go to sleep and my phone pinged. I couldn’t believe it.

“I thought it was a firework at first, but I listened to the sound and you couldn’t hear any noise.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it. I thought, ‘what is that?’

“Some of my friends said it looked like a meteor.

“I was really surprised. I have never seen a meteor before, only shooting stars.

“I thought it’s definitely not a firework, I had never seen a firework light up the horizon like that.”

A meteor is a space rock that enters Earth's atmosphere, as it falls toward Earth, the resistance, or drag, of the air on the rock makes it extremely hot.

It becomes known as a meteorite after it hits the surface.

The video shows a  "shooting star" and the bright streak is not actually the rock, but rather the glowing hot air as the hot rock zips through the atmosphere.
