Mysterious Edinburgh artwork appears on busy street with 'mass surveillance' reference

A mysterious piece of artwork depicting a man peering through a newspaper has appeared on a busy Edinburgh road.

The striking piece can be seen next to a cash machine on North Junction Street in Leith, just outside the U Save Convenience Store.

It shows a man in a jacket and hat reading, spying through two holes cut out of a newspaper called 'The Government Times'.

The paper references phone records being collected en masse, a snooper's charter, facial recognition and online profiling.

The graffiti is understood to have appeared on the street at some point on Wednesday (July 28).

Edinburgh Live reported last month how a separate graffiti artwork had appeared in a city centre close, courtesy of renowned artist The Rebel Bear.

The piece, located in Reid's Close, shows a man chained to a coronavirus-shaped ball and trying to wriggle away as Nicola Sturgeon stands nearby with a pair of bolt-cutters.

After being posted to social media, the piece racked up thousands of likes.
