Mysterious '20ft' sinkhole appears in Kilmarnock playing field

A sinkhole has mysteriously appeared in a Kilmarnock playing field today.

The huge crater emerged at the playing fields near the Dean Park this morning.

One eyewitness reckons the shaft is at least 5ft across and another person on the scene reckoned the hole is around 20ft deep.

Joanne Smith found the sinkhole this morning and says her dog was lucky not to fall into it.

She told the Kilmarnock Standard: "I got the absolute fright of my life when I saw the thing.

"My Staffordshire bull terrier Blaze was off the lead and he was sniffing round about it when I saw it.

"I've never seen anything like that in my entire life."

The 40-year-old dog walker was so worried that someone could be injured in the sinkhole that she called the police and East Ayrshire Council.

Luckily, a maintenance man arrived after an hour-and-a-half and cordoned off the hole to prevent anyone falling in.

The playing fields, just off Dean Road are used by lots of families and young children for recreation.

The grass is also where Dean Thistle play football.

"I was just worried that someone could be hurt," added Joanne.

"I walk my dog here most days and that hole wasn't here yesterday and there were kids playing football on the grass yesterday.

"It could have been a lot worse and that's why I had to wait until someone arrived.

"I could not see the bottom of the hole but someone there reckoned it was around 20ft deep."
