Myles Jack says he’ll remain at MIKE LB despite the absence of Telvin Smith

Upon Telvin Smith’s decision to step away from football in 2019, many fans expressed that they’d like to see Myles Jack moved to his spot on the weak-side. The young linebacker has played at the position before for the Jags and flourished in the process, which is why many felt he was an option to replace Smith who has been a tackling machine for the defensive unit. However, it appears the organization and Jack have different plans.

When asked about where he believes he’ll play this season at Calais Campbell’s CRC Foundation event, Jack told the media that it would be from the same position he played at in 2018: the middle linebacker position.

Sounds like he’s pretty set on remaining in the middle — and the same could be said about the organization.

All of the signs were there for Jack to remain at his old spot as their decision to select Quincy Williams in the 2019 NFL Draft tipped their hand. Rarely have the Jags draft small-school players in the top-4 rounds, but Jags general manager Dave Caldwell seemed high on his talent at linebacker. Williams’ skill-set screamed weak-side linebacker from the jump, and as a top-3 pick, one would think he’ll start there one day.

After landing Williams, the Jags proceeded to add veterans Ramik Wilson, Najee Goode, and D.J. Alexander, who coach Doug Marrone singled out alongside Williams when he was asked about Smith last week. Now, it’s a matter of the competition unfolding during offseason training activities and training camp, but it’s pretty clear they want Jack to remain at MIKE linebacker.
