Myers: Warriors will be ‘good partners’ with league even if own season feels over

Golden State Warriors president of basketball operations Bob Myers assured the basketball world in an interview with ESPN that his team would continue playing if and when the time comes as an attempt to clarify comments head coach Steve Kerr made in April.

“We want to be good partners and we will be good partners,” Myers told ESPN.

On April 28, Kerr said the team is in offseason mode.

“Bob Myers and I got on a Zoom with our players, our whole roster last week. And it was just a chance to check-in, but it was also a chance for Bob to update the players on his contact with the league and the latest news, but it also kind of felt like our annual team exit meeting,” Kerr said.

“Our coaching staff and I have been undergoing staff evaluations, offseason plans, so we are absolutely in offseason mode right now.”

Even in a normal season, it’s not unusual for the bad teams to start checking out as the season wraps up. The Warriors, who have the worst record in the league at 15-50, are eliminated from the playoff race.

Nearly two months since the last NBA game was played, the team would have to get back into game shape for games which would have relatively meaningless results.

They’re in a different position than playoff teams hoping for a chance to win the crown.

Myers said Kerr’s comments were taken out of context.

“The truth is we have the worst record in the league. That’s a fact,” Myers said. “It’s hard to motivate in our unique position. But that doesn’t mean players don’t have pride and won’t come back and play and care about the league as a whole.”

He also pointed out that though the results wouldn’t matter on the season, there are still things to be learned about the team.

“We’d like to see Steph (Curry) play with (Andrew) Wiggins,” Myers said. “I think we got to see that for one game where we were hoping to see that.”
