Police are searching for a Myanmar man suspected of murdering and dismembering his wife, whose body was found stuffed inside a plastic box at an apartment in Makkasan of Bangkok's Ratchathewi district, earlier Friday.
Din Daeng Police Station received a report of the gruesome discovery at 1.35am of June 12.
Police and forensics officers, a doctor from Ramathibodi Hospital's forensic unit and rescue volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation were sent to the scene.
Inside the second-floor room of a three-storey residential building, officers found signs of a struggle, with belongings scattered throughout. On the rear balcony, they discovered a large black plastic box closed by a lid, from which a strong odour was emanating.
Upon opening the box, officers found pieces of a dismembered corpse, with the abdomen cut open. The victim is believed to have been dead for several days. Police are continuing to search missing body parts, including the head.
The victim is believed to be a 34-year-old Myanmar national, the room's occupant and a server at a restaurant in the Klong Toey area.
Investigators said that prior to the discovery, a relative of the victim, also a Myanmar national, reported her missing and asked officers to accompany them to the apartment where she had been staying.
Formal identification is pending confirmation from Ramathibodi Hospital.
Closed-circuit camera footage showed the victim's husband dragging a large suitcase out of the apartment.
The suspect was the victim's husband and works as a cook at a pub on Phetchaburi Road. Police are working to track him down for questioning.
Relatives said the man had gone missing after the incident. Investigators believe the killing may have been motivated by jealousy, after the husband reportedly learned his wife had become involved with another man.
