Myanmar's democracy movement 30 years on since the uprising

The democracy protest movement in Myanmar started 30 years ago.

Despite thousands of protesters flooding the streets across the Southeast Asian country demanding an end to the one-party rule, it took decades before free and fair elections were held.

That happened in 2015, bringing Aung San Suu Kyi and her party into office.

Once heralded as an icon for human rights and democracy, she has since come under heavy criticism.
