KANCHANABURI: Many Myanmar migrants have returned to work in Thailand after the long Songkran holidays this month.
Local border officials estimated over the past few days more than 2,000 Myanmar people entered the western province daily through Sangkhla Buri district. Migrant workers had taken holidays since early this month to visit their homes during Songkran. Most migrants travelling through Sangkhla Buri were from Mawlamyine.
They were returning in groups of relatives and families as most of them were from same villages. They chartered buses to Phaya Tong Su border area opposite Kanchanaburi's Three Pagodas pass. From the border pass, they travelled farther to Sangkhla Buri and Muang district.
Migrant Kai said that most migrant workers who were arriving in Sangkhla Buri were Mon people.
Local officials said most of the migrants worked in rubber plantations in the South. Their return trips revived the businesses of local buses in Sangkhla Buri as Thai tourists preferred vans to buses.
