RANONG: Two Myanmar men have been arrested for the murder of the father of two local politicians after demanding 8 million baht ransom, police said.

The murder was discovered on July 10, when the body of Thanu Jaidee, 81, was found in a well at a house in a rubber plantation in tambon Pak Chan of Kra Buri district. The victim had been bludgeoned on the back of his head and about his face.

Pol Lt Gen Surachate Hakpan, the assistant police chief in charge of the case, said Thanu was the father of Thawat Jaidee, an assistant to a Ranong MP, and Narumol Boonchuay, chairwoman of the Pak Chan tambon administration organisation.

On the afternoon of July 9 Mr Thawat had called Pak Chan police and said his father was missing from his home at Moo 5 village in tambon Pak Chan. He was told by neighbours that an unidentified man arrived on a motorcycle and took Thanu from the house.

At 6.30pm, a nephew of Thanu received a phone message saying Thanu was held captive and demanding 8 million baht for his release.

The search for Thanu began that night and his body was found the following morning.

On Monday, police with warrants issued by the Ranong Court arrested two Myanmar men - Zaw Myo, 23, and Khin Maung Zaw, 36. They were charged with abduction, murder and demanding a ransom.

The two suspects allegedly confessed they had beaten Thanu about the head with lengths of wood. Once he was dead they tied his legs together with a loincloth and dumped the body in the old well.
