'My wife's certainly happy': Hemsworth to return home to shoot next Thor instalment

It's the news that Australian Avengers fans have been waiting for.

Marvel's new Thor movie will be shooting in Sydney from next year after a cash injection from the NSW and Federal governments to secure the project.

Thor: Love and Thunder will be produced at Sydney's Fox Studios and Australian actor Chris Hemsworth will again reprise the title role.

Hemsworth said he was looking forward to filming on home soil.

"Being able to stay home and put the kids to bed in their own home — as opposed to dragging them across the globe to various hotels — is, as a parent, hugely important.

"My wife's certainly happy," he said.

"A lot of the scripts I read now... location is at the top of the list."

This will be the second Thor film to be shot in Australia, with the 2017 Thor: Ragnarok filmed in Queensland.

"For a lot of years my goal has been to shoot here more often and having had such a wonderful experience with Ragnarok that solidified that need and want and passion," Hemsworth said.

"There's just such an incredible work ethic here."

The announcement comes off the back of the April release of Avengers: Endgame which has become the highest grossing film of all time.

Thor: Love and Thunder will provide the Australian film industry with back-to-back opportunities, following on directly from Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, also being filmed in Sydney.

The project was secured through a Federal Government location incentive worth $24 million as well as a tax concession.

It is expected to create 2,500 jobs and generate $178 million for the economy.

"Make no mistake and I'm going to hammer it home — pardon the pun," NSW Arts Minister Don Harwin said.

"NSW is absolutely determined to stay the number one place for filmmaking in Australia. We've always had 60 per cent of the film industry here — we're determined to keep it and increase it."

Marvel Studios will offer a trainee program to further enhance the skills of Australia's next-generation screen talent, working with students at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, the National Institute of Dramatic Arts and tertiary institutions to target skill shortages.
