'My vegan girlfriend is mad I won't give up butter, I'm doing the best I can'

A person has asked for advice online after his vegan girlfriend demanded they only cook meat-free meals for them - even though they don't follow a plant-based diet.

The couple have been left divided as the meat-eating partner feels they have sacrificed a lot for the relationship, though the vegan girlfriend is not so willing to compromise on the issue.

While they have already cut out a lot of meat products, the partner still likes to use butter in cooking as they do not like the vegan equivalent, but the vegan girlfriend feels that this should stop as it does not respect her diet.

Taking to Reddit, the person said they had compromised a lot for the relationship by cutting back on their meat intake so feels it is now time for the vegan girlfriend to compromise a little.

In the post, the author, who remained anonymous, explained: "I am very meat conscious, and only eat it on holidays. I try to avoid animal products in general because of my girlfriend, but personally have no problem with eating locally sourced/humane animal products including meat.

"I also eat eggs daily from my backyard chickens and butter for cooking. My girlfriend and I used to rotate cooking meals. She now refuses to eat the meals I prepare because I use butter in most of my recipes."

The person added that the girlfriend does not have to eat the meals prepared for her but she could make more compromises to equal out the relationship.

But the girlfriend was not happy with this.

"She says I am not respecting her choice to be vegan. She says she can't make me vegan, but the least I could do is prepare vegan meals," the author of the post explained.

"I told her that I sacrificed eating lots of animal products I enjoy to respect her, while she hasn't done anything for me. Such as eating my dishes where the only animal product is butter.

"I told her I am making meals with no meat, no eggs, but I don't like the vegan substitute for butter when I make my creamy dishes. such as pot pie (with fake chicken). I am trying to accommodate but it feels like I'm the only one giving anything up."

In response, many have sided with the partner and said the girlfriend is being unreasonable and should make more compromises with the food.

One person wrote: "The girlfriend is basically saying, I can't make you vegan, but I am making you vegan."

While another stated: "There is no compromise when one party does all the compromising."
