'My uni roommate refuses to live with me after finding out I was raised nudist'

Anyone who has ever been to university and moved in with complete strangers will tell you it's not easy.

To be honest, living with anyone who isn't your partner or immediate family can be tricky, but when your school assigns for roommate for you, it's basically a pot luck draw.

One teen, however, thought she'd hit the jackpot, when she and her assigned roomie started , Emily, talking over the summer break before their first semester at college started and they instantly hit it off.

"She seemed like an absolute sweetheart, and I was really excited to move in," the 18-year-old explained on Reddit's Am I The A**hole forum.

Things were going well between the two women, until the second night of living together, when temperatures soared and the woman took her top off through the night to get more comfortable, sleeping in just her underwear. We've all been there.

"Katie saw me topless the next morning and asked me to put something on. I apologised and did so, but she didn’t talk to me for like two days until I asked if something was wrong," the woman explained. "She was still upset that I slept partially nude while she was in the room."

It was at this point that the woman decided to disclose a little bit more information about her home life, revealing to her roommate that she is, in fact, a nudist and therefore sees nudity as "no big deal."

"I was raised in a clothing optional environment. My parents are nudists. We visited nude resorts, the whole nine yards," she explained. "I enjoy casual nudity myself, it’s not a big deal. I don’t tell a lot of people but don’t see it as something to be ashamed of either."

She continued: "I argued that nudity wasn’t a big deal, I wasn’t even fully nude and we’re both girls. At that point I mentioned how I was literally a nudist growing up and it’s just a body.

"Katie did not take this well. She was like, 'wtf you’re such a weirdo' and 'why wouldn’t you tell me this before I wouldn’t have roomed with you.' I’m now getting the silent treatment and it may be an awkward semester."

The woman went on to say that she has no intention of parading around naked and she was genuinely apologetic for making Katie feel uncomfortable, but said she felt nudism has a stigma attached to it and feels like Katie was overreacting due to her own beliefs on the subject.

Turning to Reddit, the woman questioned whether she was in the wrong for sleeping topless, or whether others also believed Katie had overreacted to the situation.

"It’s not like you paraded around, you were in your own bed. She’s a prude and needs to grow up. There’s a lot more things to see in university than your roommate topless," one Reddit user responded.

Another agreed: "If she had strict rules about nudity she should’ve disclosed that then. To share a room with someone and think you’d never see them naked even by accident is ridiculous."

However, not everyone was on the same page, with another Reddit user commenting: "Surely, as a nudist, you're more than aware that not everyone is comfortable with nudity. If you had given it a few weeks or a month, you and Katie would have gotten to know each other a bit better, she probably would have learned your background, and you would have naturally found a state of acceptable roommate undress that was comfortable for both of you.

"For Katie's part, I think she's overreacting and also wrong for implying you had some sort of duty to disclose this before school."

"It's a shared space though and a roommate exposing themselves to you is a big no no. Her roommate deserves to be comfortable in her own home, without the exposure of another person's naughty bits," another agreed. "She can sleep with a shirt on in a shared space, it's not going to kill anyone."
