My tripe revenge served cold

I vowed never to read the Guardian again if the front page of Monday’s Sport section (29 June) was not devoted to the England women’s football victory against Canada. It was. Phew!

• So the FA accountants were looking to cut back on the funding for women’s football due to lack of success in the size of crowds and the level of tournament “success”. A semi-final place was merely considered “tangible progress”. On that maxim should not all England teams be paying the FA back for their intangible progress over the past two decades?

• Tripe (Open door, 29 June)! Oh for the far-off days of carefree youth, ice-cold honeycomb, salt, pepper, vinegar, tomatoes and bread and butter. A meal made for hot weather with UCP shops and cafes widespread “up north”. In 1959 it was a big leap from the Manchester suburbs to a central London head office where I was mocked as a tripe eater and disbelieved on the existence of black tripe. My revenge was to send them an unlabelled package of black tripe. Today, the panic it caused would trigger biological warfare alerts.

Peter Hanson

• Is Keith Flett on Maryam’s speed-dial (Letters, passim)?
