'My son's school won't let me breastfeed him - I'm being discriminated against'

While some children can't wait to start school, others would much rather stay home with their parents for a while longer before spending time in the classroom. But one mum claims to have been "discriminated against" for trying to keep part of her son's routine the same as he starts his first year.

She explained how she asked the school whether she could stop by every play and lunch time to breastfeed him like she has been doing since his birth - but they simply said this would not be possible. Taking to social media, the mum vented: "My son turns five at the end of this year so I have to enrol him in school. The school has just told me I can't come and breastfeed him at recess and lunch. I don't know what to do - I feel like they're discriminating against me."

While some parents shared how they opted to home school their children for this exact reason, others praised the school for not allowing her in to breastfeed.

Commenting on her post, one user said: "I'm still breastfeeding my seven-year-old, it's why I made the choice to home school."

After the post was shared on Reddit, another user added: "Imagine the kid trying to explain why he doesn’t have a lunchbox or lunch - because mummy is coming to breastfeed him. Bullying commences in 3-2-1."

A third user said: "Hopefully that kid eats more than just breastmilk. The kid probably only uses breastfeeding time as a comfort thing, which is definitely a psychological no-no. The kid needs to find other ways to find safety."

One more user added: "If she's insistent on continuing to breastfeed at that age then why not just express/pump milk into a container for him. Kids remember that, I can imagine this would follow him right through high school."

It comes after a flight attendant complained he felt uncomfortable after seeing a woman breastfeeding on a plane.

Her husband explained how they were travelling from Miami to Atlanta when his wife was shamed for feeding their hungry baby.

Taking to social media, he said: "My wife [was told] to cover up while breastfeeding our infant on a flight because it made the flight attendant uncomfortable while he stood over our seat staring - in 2022."

While the man reminded the flight attendant that he could simply stop looking at his wife's breast, he instead decided to continue staring and blamed her for "pulling it out" for everyone to see.

The man added: "When I notified that he was welcome to not look at my wife's breast, he declared that she should not pull it out and that it was common courtesy.

"When my wife responded, 'My baby needs to eat', he said, 'Yeah', and walked away. She wasn't showing any more than someone in a bathing suit."
