'My sister's terrible baby name choice is ruining our relationship - it's awful'

It's always tricky when a parent-to-be asks for your opinion on a baby name, especially if you aren't keen on it yourself. One woman says she decided to be brutally honest when her pregnant sister asked for her thoughts on a name, and it's since caused tension between the pair.

According to this aunt-to-be, her 20-year-old sister 'A' is pregnant with a baby boy, and has now gotten to the stage where she's considering what to name him. Reaching out for input, she asked family members for their thoughts on the name 'Kalypso', asking whether they thought it sounded 'ugly' - but she didn't like the response she got.

Taking to Reddit, where she goes by the username u/dk-cobain, the unnamed woman recalled: "I responded, 'Sounds like a dogs name' mind you I have been suggesting names for the baby since she asked us for help.

"I eventually told her to name her baby whatever she wanted since it’s her baby. A got offended and said I was very rude, I quickly apologised if I came across as being rude but she wasn’t having it. We haven’t spoken since then."

Reaching out to fellow Reddit users for their thoughts on the matter, she now wonders whether she should have just been more complimentary about the name, regardless of her true opinion.

One person commented: "She asked for your opinion and you gave it. That sounds like something I’d say to my own sister, to be honest. If she loved the name enough your opinion wouldn’t even matter and she’d name him whatever she wanted."

Another advised: "If you ask an opinion, be ready to receive one.. You didn't have to phrase it quite so rudely though, there are multiple ways to express that you don't like it."
