'My sister ruined my gender reveal party - but my family think I'm the heartless one'

A woman has received a huge backlash from her family after telling her sister that her infertility is not a personality trait. The 28-year-old woman took to Reddit to explain that her and her 35-year-old sister have never hated each other, but have always had clashing personalities.

In the post, she explains that her sister is unable to have kids and that she apparently uses this to garner sympathy from people at large family events. "She's brought up this hardship during countless celebratory events. For example: About a year ago, one of our cousins was having a baby shower," explained the sister in the post.

"During the event, Claire struck up a conversation with nearly every guest and would gradually go into disturbing detail about her infertility struggles."

The sister describes this in the post as 'manipulative behaviour' and claims that everybody in her family caves into her.

"I've held my tongue for many years because I know that I'll get irreparable backlash from most of my family if I speak up or exclude her from events," she explained.

However, the 28-year-old goes on to share that she is currently pregnant with triplets which she feels has caused some jealousy from her sister.

Before the recent gender reveal party, the woman was unsure whether to invite her sister as she felt the mood of the happy event could be affected.

"I didn't want to invite my sister, but I knew that she would tell everyone I didn't include her and would cause drama, so I ended up inviting her," she explained.

But it was after the gender reveal portion of the event that the issues started to bubble up.

"At some point, one of my family members said, "Whew, three girls! You're sure gonna have your hands full." Before I could even respond, Claire sarcastically said, Yeah...sure must be nice."

Rather than ignore her sister's comments, the soon-to-be mother of three turned to her sister and said: "You know what, would it kill you to let others be happy once in a while? This whole pity shtick is getting really dull. Also, being infertile is NOT a personality.""

Since this outburst, she has received a lot of backlash from the family with some saying that there are some things that just cannot be said.

"She started tearing up, quickly left the table and walked out of the house. It got incredibly awkward among everyone else and the party abruptly ended," explained the woman.

However, many commenters have been quick to defend the author of the post with one Redditor saying: "As someone that battled infertility issues for years, never did I take a celebratory event or announcement and make snide remarks. If your sister can't even fake being cordial and happy, then she should not attend those functions."

While another commented: "It sounds like she has made her infertility her identity and she thrives off the attention she is getting."
