'My sister is refusing to meet her newborn niece because of the name I chose'

Choosing a baby name is unequivocally one of the toughest decisions a new parent has to make.

Often the names are inspired by favourite singers, places, people or in one woman's case her childhood doll.

The woman explained that when she and her sister were kids, they used to play "house" all the time, and would choose names for their doll, acting as if it were their daughter.

Although they would change the name often, Harlow was their favourite.

Fast forward a few years, and one of the sisters, now 29, has given birth to a baby girl whom she decided to give that name.

"I really like this name and when I suggested it to my partner, he did as well," she wrote in her Reddit post.

"We chose it for our daughter and decided not to tell anyone the name until birth (a family tradition from my partner's family)."

But when she announced the name to her sister Mary, 27, she "reacted very poorly, shouting and calling me an a**hole."

"Mary screamed at me, that I stole the name we picked out together and didn't even tell her, that I had no right to take her name. She said that I'm tainting the memories of our childhood and erasing her.

"She has not spoken to me since and hasn't even seen her niece. I think I might have been too mean for screaming back at her and not trying to understand her side of the story, but we haven't mentioned this name in years and I didn't think that it would be such a big problem."

She concluded her post by asking whether she was in the wrong for not trying to understand how her sister felt, but users were in agreement that her sister was "childish" and that refusing to meet her niece is "ridiculous."

One person said: "You had a kid first and it was a name you both gave your dolls growing up. Your sister is being childish."

Another wrote: "I just don’t get people claiming names. She’s mad you named your kid Harlow, but I’m guessing she wanted to do the same thing, right? Telling her beforehand wouldn’t have changed anything. She’d just have been mad about it longer. And, not seeing her niece because of it is ridiculous."

But a third admitted: "You’re right but sometimes name taking is annoying. My cousin named his firstborn after me, didn’t think anything of it.

"He named his second kid after my sister, and we thought ok weird but whatever. The third kid he named after my kid and I was pissed. The icing on the cake is he named their dog after my deceased one."

Someone else added: "If she didn't say anything like 'I want Harlow to be my future daughters name' then no def NTA. Also, don't think you should have given a heads up. Names usually come from somewhere (an old friend, family member, book, movie whatever), the name wasn't used in years.

"When/if your sister stops crying just tell her it's a tribute for all your wonderful memories together. Her ego is so big she'll probably believe it."
