My sartorial choices don’t define my capabilities or me, says Kamya Panjabi who is often trolled for wearing short dresses

A strong woman is often subjected to judgment on various aspects, be it her bindaas attitude, professional or sartorial choices. Kamya Panjabi has been unapologetic about her choices and successfully battled stereotypes. The Shakti - Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki actress may have many detractors but doesn’t let them pull her down. While nasty comments keep showing up on her timeline, especially after she announced that she was joining politics, she goes about following her heart with a can’t-be-bothered-what-the-world-thinks-about-me attitude.

She says, “Yes, that happens a lot. People write nasty comments on my pictures just because of the clothes I am wearing. I receive comments like ‘short skirt pehni hai’, ‘kapde dekho iske aur ye neta hai’ on my timeline. But this is me. If I change my image on social media, I will be faking it. Also, this is the change I want to bring. I am a woman and I can do what I wish to. It’s my body and I can and will wear whatever I wish to. Don’t judge me by my clothes. I can be a part of politics irrespective of what I wear in my personal life. My sartorial choices don’t define my capabilities or me.”

The actress is in no mood to succumb to pressure and believes in living on her own terms. She says, “I dress according to the situation, event and place. I will wear a bikini if I am in Goa and something more conventional when I go to my daughter’s school. Just because I have joined politics, mere kapde change ho jaayenge? I can’t be something I’m not and will stay the way I am. A woman should be free to wear whatever she wishes to. Why should I change? The people commenting on my pictures or finding faults in what I wear need to change their perspective. Their comments make no difference to me.”
