'My nine-year-old son tried to wake his mum but she was dead in bed'

A father has described the heartbreaking moment his nine-year-old son found his mum dead in bed.

Mahmoud Ali Ibrahim phoned his wife Kasia after finishing a nightshift to tell her he was on his way home to pick the children up and take them to school, but there was no answer.

After several attempts to contact her, he started to worry, then his nine-year-old son, Karim, called him and said: "Mumma won't wake up."

Karim explained to his dad that he had been trying to wake up Kasia, 38, but she was not responding. In a panic, Mahmoud told Karim to try and splash water in her face while he called an ambulance and friends who lived nearby.

By the time Mahmoud arrived at their Cardiff home, his friend told him Kasia had died.

"My son kept on saying I saved Mumma, I put water on her face. He kept thinking for one or two days that he saved her. He didn't understand," said Mahmoud.

When the paramedics arrived, they attempted to revive her but Mahmoud was told it was too late. The reason for Kasia's death on January 9 is still unknown.

Mahmoud, 37, said it took a couple of days for his son and six-year-old daughter, Liyana, to understand what happened.

As Liyana is still so young, she doesn't fully understand what has happened, but Karim has been left completely heartbroken.

"My boy, he is really upset. No one can replace a mother."

Mahmoud said that despite the heartbreak, they celebrated both children's birthdays on January 2 and January 19.

"He kept saying 'She promised me she would make me a Minecraft cake' and 'she promised she would give me £20'.

"She was very good at making cakes, no one could make them like she could, she would always make them for birthdays for friends and family," explained Mahmoud.

According to Mahmoud, Liyana, knows what has happened but "doesn't want to face it" and doesn't talk about her mum.

"She is scared to talk about it but I am sure she has questions," he said.

The couple had been married for 13 years after meeting in Mahmoud's native Egypt. Kasia, who was from Poland, and Mahmoud moved to Wales 10 years ago, so have very little family nearby.

Mahmoud said no one could ever replace Kasia (Mahmoud Ali Ibrahim)

"Kasia's family came over from Poland for two weeks but they left on Saturday, I have my brother-in-law here and his family, but no other family.

"I am really trying, I am doing my best for them but it is hard. I am really not well, no one can describe pain like this."

Mahmoud described Kasia, who worked as housekeeping in a Cardiff hotel, as an amazing mum who put everyone before herself.

"She was the first one up and the last to go to sleep. No one will ever be like her. She was too young," he said.

Mahmoud, who works in healthcare logistics, decided to donate Kasia's organs to scientific research in the hope it could help someone in the future.

A family friend has set up a fundraiser to help pay for counselling for the children and other needs at this difficult time. To donate, click here.
