'My nightmare neighbour won't let me enjoy my garden - he keeps phoning the police'

No one likes having noisy neighbours, but most of us know there's a difference between the occasional noise you'd expect from people just living their lives in their own homes, and making a racket on a daily basis.

But one man has said he's at his wits' end when it comes to his next-door neighbour because they keep phoning the police every time he uses his garden.

The man explained that it doesn't matter what he's doing in his garden - from smoking a cigarette to playing with his dog - his neighbour will always call the police to file a noise complaint without fail.

To make matters worse, the man claims his neighbour specifically waits until just gone 10pm to file the complaint, as this is when the quiet hours begin in his neighbourhood.

In a post on Reddit, he wrote: "I have a corner neighbour that every time I'm in my backyard calls the police for a noise complaint.

"Barbecuing - noise complaint. Sitting by the fire pit - noise complaint. Smoking a cigarette - noise complaint. Going outside to play with the dog - noise complaint. Hot tub - noise complaint.

"This neighbour will wait for exactly 10pm, then call for a noise complaint. I've had cops come to my back fence at 10:05 before. I've tried talking to [the neighbour], but they won't talk to me and the cops always just say 'well keep it down'."

After struggling against his neighbour's constant complaints, the man said he's now looking for advice on how to deal with them, and is even willing to take revenge as he also asked for "petty ways to get back at them".

Commenters on the post urged the man to document each time the police are called to his property to start building a case against his neighbour, as they told him to tell the police what's happening.

Others also suggested he put up a camera in his garden to collect evidence for each time the police are called, as well as recommending he start building up a rapport with the officers that visit his home.

One person said: "Lean into it. When the cops show up, tell them a funny story about the dog, tell them to swing by when they are off duty for some BBQ, or just talk about your special interest. Be polite and charming, and make the neighbours look like idiots without being an obnoxious a**hole yourself."

While another added: "Live your life. Build rapport with the cops. [Say things like] 'Sorry you have to keep coming out here when there are no issues. I hate to see your already tight time, wasted.' [or] 'Want a hotdog off the grill? Might as well get something for having to come all the way out here for nothing.'

"The neighbour isn't going to stop because they suck. You can just continue to live, unbothered."

And a third wrote: "Go to the police station in person and tell them about the situation and that you are being harassed by your neighbour. Let the cops show up and ask them if they hear any noise. Oh, you don't? Okay, I'd like to make a harassment claim against them for abuse of emergency services. Get cameras if you don't have them already."
