'My nephew is named after a Pokémon and it's all my fault - the poor child'

Naming a child is challenging - but it can be made easier by mulling over your options with close friends and family. That's exactly what one mum decided to do when struggling to come up with a "unique" name for her son.

She asked her parents and siblings to put forward their name suggestions, with the only instruction being the name must start with Z. Taking to Reddit, the child's uncle said: "I was on a family vacation driving around the mountains and while in the van my little sister had her kid.

"The family is in celebration and apparently there was still a discussion on what the child's name would be. While they were discussing potentially unique names I kept overhearing they wanted it to begin with the letter Z, for whatever reason".

He went on to explain how he was playing Pokémon Sword on Nintendo Switch during the journey - and jokingly sought inspiration from the game.

"I had just caught Zacian with a quick ball. Truthfully, this was my second attempt at him and I just opened with it.

"I jokingly suggested, 'Hey Zacian is a cool name. It means sword in Japanese.' My mother and family loved it so it's now official.

"My older sister and girlfriend are the only ones that know the truth, so now we are getting some Pokémon related gifts for the baby to reveal the truth and make it a funny joke."

However, it turns out the uncle misunderstood the meaning of the word Zacian, with it actually just being 'Za' plus 'cyan'.

A statement on NintendoLife reads: "Zacian does not mean sword in Japanese. Zacian is just Za + cyan, just as Zamazenta, its legendary companion, is Za + magenta."

Commenting on the man's post, one user said: "It's not like the baby got the name Pikachu."

Another user added: "When I was 13 my mother got pregnant and asked for baby name ideas. I jokingly said Jor-El (Superman’s dad). Anyway, my brother Jor-El is 23 now and loves his name."

A third user said: ""I was expecting Squirtel as the kids name."

One more user added: "When my mum was pregnant with her fourth son, one of my other brothers insisted that the baby be named Cinderella. When the baby turned out to be a boy, he still insisted."
