My Name is Mina by David Almond - review

Mina is an extraordinary person with an amazing imagination – the character from all books I've read that I'd most like to meet. She loves the poet William Blake who was a misfit like her, especially his words;

How can a bird that is born for joy
Sit in a cage and sing?

I discovered that they're from the schoolboy in Songs of Innocence and they're exactly how Mina felt about school. SATS day was her last at school because she wrote pages of invented words for the writing test. Although I like school I understand how she felt but I wouldn't have the courage to do the same.

The book is Mina's journal, not a record of events but an exciting journey into words, nature, poetry, mythology, and because of a sadness in her life, into quite frightening places. I like her because she doesn't mind what other children think of her.

My Name is Mina isn't like other books I enjoy, that have strong story lines, but I was absolutely hypnotised by it so that I almost felt I had become Mina. I'm sure anyone who loves to let their dreams take them to unknown places would love it too.
