'My mum has ordered me to change my baby's name - she says it's old-fashioned'

Naming your child is a special decision for every parent - but it can sometimes be overshadowed by other people trying to get their two cents in. That's exactly what one woman claims is happening to her after she told her mum what she wants to call her firstborn child.

She sat down with her husband to brainstorm baby names - and after spending hours, if not days, each putting forward their suggestions, they finally agreed on one. The expectant mum said: "I excitedly shared the name my husband and I finally picked for our baby girl due August 1. Picking names has been a trial because everyone has an opinion on a name, or knew someone who they hated with that name."

She hoped her close family would instantly fall in love with the name just like she did - but this didn't happen.

"The baby's name is Stella Claire - and my mum hates it," the expecting mum added.

"She keeps going on and on and on about how it's an old ugly name, how she'll be an 'old maid' because of it, how I need to choose another name.

"When I firmly told her that's what it's going to be, she's now pouting and being very passive aggressive."

While she doesn't want to change her baby's name, she can't help but feel disheartened by her mum's reaction to it and has taken to Reddit to ask for user's opinions on the entire situation.

Commenting on her post, one user said: "I love the name Stella! It's beautiful.

"I would, and this may not be the right way to go about it, just say something like 'We'll see when we are her what name fits' to get her to stop being annoying.

"When Stella is born, her name then will be the last thing she is going to worry about."

Another user added: "Ignore your mum she will get over it. My cousin named her daughter an unusual name and we all hated it and now we can't imagine her being anything else!"

A third user said: "Old fashioned names are becoming popular again. She will have plenty of company in school. Tell your mum point blank that she is hurting your feelings and you want her to keep her opinions to herself."

One more user added: "Not only did my mother hate my son's name, but she refuses to call him his birth name when he is born. Hopefully she comes around!

"Congrats on your baby girl, and I think its a beautiful name you chose. And even if I didn't, who cares! It's your decision!"
