'My mouldy kitchen is making my kids sick, but nothing is being done about it'

A mum-of-two has complained that her mouldy house is making her children ill.

Ashé Scott says her 15-year-old son, Jayden, and nine-year-old daughter, Princess, have suffered chest problems and trouble breathing since moving into their home in Rawpool Gardens, Baguley, two years ago.

The 33-year-old says doctors have been unable to explain their illnesses.

However, Ms Scott believes mould behind her kitchen is responsible, but says the housing association which owns the property have told her they are unable to fix it.

"It's putting me and my family's health at risk," she said.

"For a young lad and girl to be experiencing trouble breathing, I just don't think that's right.

"Mould like that can affect your health and I'm worried it will just get worse."

After moving into the property in the summer of 2019, Ms Scott said she noticed an unusual smell coming from the kitchen.

She said she reported it to Wythenshawe Community Housing Group, who told her the smell was the result of the property having been 'left for so long' and that it would eventually disappear.

However, it did not and, after Ms Scott complained again, the housing association sent someone out to investigate in October.

After removing the kitchen units, they discovered a large amount of mould covering one of the walls.

"I had to throw everything in there away," Ms Scott explained.

"I spoke to the housing association and they said 'move your kettle and bleach wipe it'."

Ms Scott said she was told to wait for the treatment to take effect, but it never did. Wythenshawe Community Housing Group say they are looking to resolve the situation 'quickly' but Ms Scott says the mould has spread.

"I can still smell it," she said. "It's really strong.

"They have come out again and said they couldn't smell anything

"The mould is all over the wall around where the cooker is.

"It seems to have seeped into the wood.

"Every time I take a cup or a plate out of the cupboard, it smells like mould.

"It's so strong I have had to take all of my stuff out of ten cupboards.

"It's years and years of mould. It's not just something that arose overnight."

Ms Scott believes the cupboards need 'ripping out and replacing', but says the housing association told her they were 'fine'.

She says she now feels 'deflated' and fears the mould will further impact her and her children's health if it is not dealt with.

"I'm getting to the end of my tether," said Ms Scott.

"I'm not getting anywhere. It's like I'm banging my head against a brick wall.

"It seems like they don't want to try and sort it out.

"I'm a good tenant so it's upsetting that they can't do anything for me."

A spokesperson for Wythenshawe Community Housing Group said: “We are continuing to work in conjunction with an independent specialist contractor to resolve this situation quickly and we are very keen to find a satisfactory solution for our customer.

"As always, the health and safety of our customers is our key priority.”
