'My mother-in-law returned birthday gifts I gave her - she said they were too cheap'

A woman has been left fuming with her mother-in-law after she returned her birthday gifts, claiming she didn't want them as they looked 'cheap'. The unnamed woman, who has since split from her husband, recalled that she had purchased jewellery and a scarf for her in-law but soon was given everything back with the relative saying she would have no use for it.

She claims she and the older woman had rarely seen eye to eye during the relationship with her ex-husband but she was still left flabbergasted by her in-law's behaviour around these presents.

Taking to Reddit, the woman explained that she refused to buy anything else for the in-law going forward.

In the post, the woman, who remained anonymous, explained: "It was her birthday so I bought her a few bits and pieces at a local outlet mall including a necklace, scarf and bracelet.

"I also bought these cute earrings at a craft fair. I spent the same amount I always did, around £30 and wrapped it all up. She opened them at her party and seemed fine."

But she was shocked a couple of days later when everything was returned to her with the relative saying she would have no use for the gifts.

"She said she couldn't wear anything but sterling silver or gold (a lie, she wore jewellery that wasn't precious metal plenty including previous gifts I bought her)," explained the woman.

"There was also a small hole at the very edge of the scarf. Fair enough, I hadn't spotted that and I assume it's where the security tag had been in the store but it was genuinely tiny and would never be noticed.

"I was flabbergasted and I apologised about the hole and how I hadn't spotted it and how I was unaware of her new stance on jewellery."

The mother-in-law later told the woman's husband that the gifts were cheap and it was disrespectful of her to spend so little.

In response, many have sided with the author of the post and said the in-law's reaction was unreasonable.

One person wrote: "That is rude. I wouldn't have spent another penny on her either! Good on you for that!!!"

While another stated: "Hope she enjoys her box of Nothing for her birthday and Xmas."
