'My mother-in-law keeps spelling my son's name wrong on purpose - it's infuriating'

A mum has expressed her frustrations with her mother-in-law after the woman has spent a year spelling her own grandson's name wrong on purpose.

In a post on Reddit, the mum explained her son has a common name that doesn't have an unusual spelling, but her mother-in-law seems determined to keep spelling it incorrectly and making the moniker seem more complicated than it actually is.

For privacy reasons, the mum did not disclose her son's name but said that if her son's name was Tyler, then her mother-in-law would go out of her way to spell it something like Tylur.

In her post, she said: "So, for about a year now, my mother-in-law has been spelling my son's name incorrectly. His name isn't uncommon. Not highly common but, you probably know someone who has the name.

"It's also spelt in the traditional way. Nothing fancy. If his name was Tyler she would be spelling it Tylur."

The mum admitted the spelling mistakes aren't a "huge deal" in the grand scheme of things, but it has been infuriating for her and her husband - especially as they've already corrected her several times to no avail.

She added: "It's not a huge deal, but husband and I have both told her on multiple occasions how to spell his name, she just refuses! I don't get it!

"He has stuff with his name on it that she's seen, held, and commented on. I know I can't stop her, but it's driving me mad every time I text her. I don't want to show her things because she's going to spell his name wrong."

And the mum's not the only one who has been through something similar with a grandparent, as several commenters on the Reddit post claimed their relatives had also purposefully misspelt their name.

One person said: "My grandpa did this with me and it drove my mother crazy. He would intentionally misspell my name on everything (even embroidered on a beach towel), but if he was writing me a cheque for my birthday, he would spell it right."

While another added: "My grandmother did this when I was a kid and my parents hated it. She never stopped until I myself was old enough to write her a letter and correct her."

And a third wrote: "My name is Taylor. As common as can be. My husband and I are high school sweethearts, together for 15+ years. My mother-in-law still spells my name Tayler."

Other commenters asked if the mother-in-law was doing it on purpose or if she was just "oblivious", but the mum returned to the post to clarify as she said: "She was an English major. Absolutely this is intentional. If there was a language thing, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest."
