Newspapers:
More often than not I buy the Guardian, but more often than not I just do the crossword.
Magazines:
I get Time Out and I hardly ever read the articles. I can't stand bloke's mags. They immediately make me feel alienated: cars, sports wear and aftershave - things I don't actually own.
Radio:
I like phone-ins on regional stations at 3am, particularly from the West Midlands. They select a couple of topical subjects, but people phone in and just talk about really local issues, such as what's happening at the skip down the road.
Books:
I'm reading Is Shane McGowan Still Alive? by Tim Bradford, which is a sort of travelogue about an Englishman in Ireland, and the marketing of that country. Just finished a fantastic book called Leadville by Edward Platt, billed as the biography of the A40.
Television:
I wince when 30 year olds talk about loving Supermarket Sweep, but I do like having Watercolour Challenge on in the background. I find things like that genuinely pleasurable and I'm not trying to be ironic. My favourite show is Call My Bluff, which I watched as a boy and adored. I was so excited when they brought it back. It's a programme which has a real generosity of spirit.
Film:
I haven't been to the cinema for more than a year, for which I am regularly mocked by my friends.
Adverts:
I come from a lower-middle-class family where debt is the worst thing possible so adverts which encourage you to buy on credit alarm me. Because of my daytime viewing I usually watch adverts for hearing aids and things like that.
New Media:
I was getting 400 emails a day when my show was on, plus three proposals of marriage. They said, "I liked your show, if you want to marry get in touch." People are slightly mad.
