My London: Molly Goddard

Home is…

Westbourne Park with my boyfriend, Tom [Shickle, bassist of indie band Spector].

Where would you recommend for a first date?

I haven’t been on a first date for eight years, but the Rochelle Bar & Canteen at the ICA is a good spot for cocktails (followed by a snog in front of Buckingham Palace).

Last play you saw?

Britten’s choral work, War Requiem, designed by Wolfgang Tillmans. It was incredibly beautiful, but I’m not convinced I understood it all. It didn’t help that I only saw the surtitles once I stood up to leave.

Bus, taxi or Tube?

I like to walk whenever I can, but I have to commute on the Central line to my studio in Bethnal Green every day.

What’s your biggest extravagance?

Eating out, bath salts (1kg every bath) and expensive tomatoes.

What’s the best meal you’ve had in London?

An after-show celebration dinner at Dumplings’ Legend in Chinatown: we ate tons of dumplings, did seven solid hours of karaoke and drank about 700 beers.

Where would you like to be buried?

Probably Kensal Green Cemetery. I have a few wonderful friends there whom I would get to say hello to.

Who do you call when you want to have fun?

My sister, Alice, is my favourite person to dance with. She carries energy bars out with her so she doesn’t get tired.

What would you do if you were Mayor for the day?

Fill all the buildings that are sitting empty with people who need homes.

What makes someone a Londoner?

Walking up the left-hand side of the Tube escalator.

Best thing a London cabbie has ever said to you?

That’s an interesting dress you’re wearing — did you choose it yourself?

What’s your London secret?

Late night games at Las Vegas Arcade on Wardour Street.

Favourite shops?

Dover Street Market for people watching and its Comme des Garçons edit, Portobello Wholefoods for healthy stuff, Portobello Market on Friday for the clothes and furniture, or on Saturdays for the second-hand gold.

CDG Play

Favourite pub or club?

The Cow in Westbourne Park for Guinness and oysters, The Royal Oak on Columbia Road for after-work drinks — and St. John in Smithfield for Eccles cakes and sherry. All my favourite clubs have closed down, which is heartbreaking.

Who is your hero?

Louise Wilson, the late Central Saint Martins professor. She taught me to trust my gut and never make what I think people want to see.

If you could buy any building, which would it be?

Apparently the Royal Automobile Club has an amazing pool, so I could swim every day.

What do you collect?

Swimwear and second-hand gold rings.

Dress Portrait, a collaborative photographic exhibition of Molly Goddard’s dresses, is at Chelsea Space.
