My Little Pony will be the latest toy line to debut on the big screen after manufacturer Hasbro revealed plans for its own in-house movie.
The colourful range of silken-tressed equine playthings are being primed to debut in cinemas for 2017, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Joe Ballarini, best known for his work on the 2008 comedy horror Dance of the Dead, is writing the screenplay.
My Little Pony, which first hit stores in 1983, will follow famous toy lines such as Transformers, Lego and GI Joe into multiplexes. A number of direct-to-video movies have previously been made, along with an animated TV show which helped the range enjoy a huge resurgence in popularity four years ago.
The four Transformers films have together taken more than $3.7bn (£2.3bn) at the global box office, while February’s The Lego Movie won critical acclaim and a haul of $468m worldwide.
