A couple have faced a huge backlash from their in-laws after the older pair installed a garage lift on their son's house while he was on honeymoon. His wife took to Reddit to explain that they had provided details on how to get into their house in case of emergency so were shocked when they found their in-laws had crossed this line.
The woman, who remained anonymous, explained in the post: "We returned from our honeymoon to a new garage lift installed on our home.
"We did not need or want a new garage lift and it wasn’t even on our radar of things to fix. The previous one in place worked completely fine (although a bit old)."
However, things took a turn when the in-laws handed them the bill for their new garage gadget and said the money was due in a week.
"We obviously did not budget for this and my husband told his parents that," explained the author of the post.
"They did not care and told us to figure out a way to pay, even suggested using some of our wedding gift money to pay the bill.
"About a week ago, his dad said that he understood where we were coming from, that it was his idea to do the garage and that it was a gift so he would cover the payment. Please keep in mind that we’ve said NOTHING about the crossed boundary."
Despite saying he would pay however, the issue once again took a turn for the worse during a phone call with them in recent days.
The woman stated: "Last night, they called us on speakerphone and his dad asked if we had paid the bill yet.
"We said that we had not as he told us he would pay. His mom [sic] yelled ABSOLUTELY NOT!
"The parents are going on a trip over Thanksgiving so in an attempt to get them to empathize [sic] with our situation, my husband asked how they would feel if we made a change to their home on something they hadn’t budgeted for or even needed while they were away and handed them the bill upon return."
However, the mum was less than impressed with this and said his son was rude for saying that.
In response, many have been quick to support the newlywed couple and say the parents are out of line.
One person wrote: "They are completely bananas!! Who does that?"
While another said: "Your in-laws are being totally ridiculous here. Yes, they were presumptuous to make un-asked for modifications to your house, then stick you with the bill?"
