My husband threw me out - I had nowhere to go: My Wigan Pier Story

Susan Cristofis, 67, was left alone after her husband threw her out of their home. As she tells Maryam Qaiser, she relies on a charity for support - and to combat loneliness.

I was born in Cyprus but our family moved to England when I was very young. My father owned a fish and chips shop and he worked very hard so he could provide for my sisters and I. He wanted enough money to pay for our weddings.

(Daily Mirror)

Our father was very old-fashioned and we all had arranged marriages. When I got married, I had three boys. But when my husband was made redundant, he threw me and the boys out. I had nowhere to go.

I moved to Birmingham before settling in Sheffield to be closer to one of my sons.

I don't see much of my sisters now, everyone has their own lives.

I don't work, which means I get lonely so I come to a drop-in centre every week to chat and make friends.

Now it feels like a family home. I am so grateful for everything they do.
