'My husband secretly returned our daughter's birthday gift and spent the money'

A woman was furious when she discovered her husband had returned their daughter's birthday gift.

The woman vented her frustration on Reddit, where she explained that her brother had bought her 11-year-old a bike for her birthday - something she'd wanted for a really long time.

But then her husband got involved.

"Days ago, I discovered that my husband reached out to my brother to ask for the receipt for the bike and returned it to the store and kept the money for himself while my daughter was at school (the bike was at home)," she explained.

"My daughter and I got home and she started crying after noticing the bike was gone.

"My husband was home at the time, he told me he returned the bike and got money in return to spend on something useful for us since the bike was just there as a 'distraction' and there was no need for it now since we're in the dead of winter."

The woman was "aggravated" by what he'd done, especially since he knew how long their daughter had wanted a bike and how hard her brother had worked to be able to afford the gift.

She told him it was "theft" and that he'd need to give her the money to replace it, but he's already spent it - on "stuff for the house".

Knowing that he had cash hidden around the house, she took some to replace the bike.

But when the husband found out the bike had been replaced, he was less than impressed.

"He found out and verbally lashed out at me saying I should've never touched the money he was saving for himself which isn't much but I lashed right back that I had to so I could re-purchase the bike he took from under our daughter," she wrote.

"He hasn't stopped grilling me about how I disrespected and undermined him and managed to make our daughter hate him after making him look like the bad guy.

"He's called me a thief and juvenile for taking money from his savings and being sneaky about it."

She concluded her post by asking users whether she was in the wrong, but the majority of people were on her side as they reassured her that she did the right thing.

One person said: "Your husband stole your daughter’s gift and you made it right. And he’s hiding money you aren’t allowed to touch? He sounds incredibly awful and controlling."

Another wrote: "Not only is he controlling but he FORBID her to touch the money. And had the audacity to call HER the thief for being sneaky and going into his savings to buy the bike again yet he waited until they weren’t home and returned the bike AND KEPT THE MONEY…. So who is the real thief here?"

A third commented: "I'm 25 seconds into Reddit today, and I'm delivering my first 'leave him'."

While someone else said: "How big of him to call her a thief when he's the one that stole the gift."
