MY Hospital sees 82% dip in new admission of mucormycosis cases

INDORE: MY Hospital- an associated hospital of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College — has reported a whopping 82.60% decline in admission of new cases of mucormycosis in the last two months.

The medical college records suggested that new admission of mucormycosis patients dipped to 16 in the four weeks of August from 92 in July.

The hospital, which catered to patients from all districts of Madhya Pradesh, has reported 761 mucormycosis admission till now.

Dr VP Pandey, MGMMC head of medicine department, who is treating consultant said, “The numbers of mucormycosis cases are decreasing consistently for the last couple of months due to ip in Covid-19 cases, which led to surge in fungal infection.”

“The new cases are routine ones. People are getting admitted to MYH mostly due to financial constraints, shifting from remote areas in lack of facilities, and re-occurrence of disease among others, said Dr Pandey.

“Most of the cases reported admission now in hospital however aren’t the actual new ones,”, added Dr Pandey.

During the peak of fungal infection the hospital managed around one-third of mucormycosis caseload of state and over half of all the 13 government medical colleges.

The hospital also performed over 932 surgeries and around 1500 endoscopy for treatment of patients so far, as per record.

The hospital, till now, has reported 60 deaths of mucormycosis patients at a fatality rate of around eight per cent almost at par or even better than many private facilities in the state.
