'My heart broke' - How David Rocastle's move to Leeds United hit Ian Wright hard

Ian Wright has spoken about the huge impact that David Rocastle's move from Arsenal to Leeds United had on him.

Wright and Rocastle were school friends who went on to represent the Gunners together in the 1991-92 campaign.

Rocastle then moved to Leeds - the reigning champions - with many Arsenal fans and some players upset at the decision.

Wright was arguably hit hardest by the decision to sell the midfielder to Howard Wilkinson's side.

Rocastle sadly passed away in 2001 after suffering from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, aged just 33.

To mark the 19th anniversary of the passing of the Gunners' legend, Wright appeared on Arsenal podcast Arsecast.

And the former England striker opened up about the moment he heard his close friend was about to move to Leeds.

Wright said: "The sad thing about it is I remember going into training that particular morning and when I went into training, David was outside pacing around in a little square.

"He looked agitated and he was crying. When I went closer to him he was crying. And I thought, oh someone has died.

"And when he said through that broken crying voice, they've accepted an offer and he's going to Leeds - I broke down into tears instantly.

"And as much as you hear it and you say as drastic and dramatic reaction from me about thinking somebody died, it felt like it.

"I don't know, I've had feelings of when people have told you news like that and it wasn't too dissimilar.

"My heart broke instantly. I went straight to tears, we hugged for a while."

Wright admits that it took some time before the news truly sunk in.

He added: "I didn't understand properly and I remember going in to see George Graham and I couldn't quite contain myself. I remember Tony Adams had to speak to me and give me that talk of these thing happen, people move on, it's okay to the point where I said no, I'm fine.

"What happened was I never thought I wasn't going to be playing with him the whole time I was at Arsenal until that moment. So the last thing I am expecting is for him to be moving on.

"It was the furthest thing from your mind and this is why I equate it to hearing that somebody has died, because you're totally not expecting it.

"And it took me a little while to get over it in respects of him not being there."
