My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga - review

Jasmine Warga, My Heart and Other Black Holes

I'd like to start by saying that the reason I requested this book was due to its fantabulous title. Also the preview cover that I had seen was beautiful.

I had extremely high expectations for this book and I'm sad to say that hardly any of these expectations were met.

One of the things that I did like, however, was the fact that the book was set in days instead of chapters. In the first two days of the book is where we meet the leading lady of the book: Aysel. She is one of the main reasons that I did not particularly enjoy the book. She is so full of self-pity that she cannot see that the reason she wants to commit suicide is pathetic. Suicide is an extremely serious issue and I feel as though in this book Jasmine Warga does not show the full weight of it. Overall Aysel's character is one-dimensional and she thoroughly irritated me throughout the book.

The other lead character of the book did little more to impress me. While his reasons for suicide were slightly more understandable he still managed to irk me with all of his cowardice and self-pity. He, like Aysel, manages to stay one-dimensional and again remains undeveloped throughout the book.

Other than the characters there was not much that was noteworthy about the book, it was all rather standard.

Overall I would give this book 2.5 stars out of 5
