'My fiancé wants to tell people he bought our house at wedding - but it was my money'

During a groom’s speech, the guests are often left in barrels of laughter, with the bride shedding a few tears as he expresses his love for her.

However, a man left his wife-to-be confused and upset after asking her if he could claim he bought their house single-handedly in his wedding speech.

Saving for a deposit also usually involves several years of sacrifice and hard work, all for a long-term goal of four walls they can call their own.

So, when an anonymous Reddit user took to the forum to ask if she was being unreasonable for refusing to let her partner take credit for the house, people had a lot to say.

She wrote: “My fiancè (37M) and I (33F) got engaged few months ago. We're getting married soon and invitations were already sent out.

“We've also been busy moving into our new home that we purchased together (30% of his savings + 70% of mine). I have to say that saving up for this house took most of my savings and prevented me from enjoying the things I love spending money on.”

So far, so good. However, she went on to drop a bombshell in her Reddit post : “My fiancè sat me down yesterday to talk about his 'groom speech'. He asked if I would be okay if he mentions the house we bought and say that HE was the one who bought it.

“I was a bit taken aback, I asked why and he said it's ‘just a confidence boost’ during the speech and that's it.

“I said I didn't feel comfortable with the idea because I think that it's unfair not to acknowledge the fact that I'd sacrificed so much to be able to buy the house.

“I refused because then people will always think the house was bought by him, which is something that will never change no matter how hard I try to prove that I contributed 70%.”

Despite explaining her point of view, it seemed the woman’s partner was adamant to include the house element in his speech.

She continues: “He got mad at me and said that I was really overthinking this whole thing and making a big deal out of it.

“We got into an argument and he started yelling saying it's just one favor he's asking me to do and yet, I'm making this ridiculous, small request my hill to die on. He's basically sulking and now he's out and refusing to answer my calls so basically he's started the silent treatment til I cave in.”

The post has since racked up 1,400 comments , with users concerned about her partner’s behaviour.

One commented: “Don’t cave in, let him run the silent treatment. Also rethink about marrying this guy, he’s behaving like a child.”

Another said: “Seriously reconsider - this is a sign of a really toxic way of thinking.”

A third wrote: “This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve read in a while. And it’s all about his fragile ego. And it’s not just a favor, it makes you look like the little woman who’s man had to take care of you and buy a house, instead of a partner (and one who contributed 70%).

“I hope your husband has other good qualities because this does not present him in a good late. He’s got a lot of growing up to do”

Others also considered that he may have already told people he paid for the house single-handedly.

A used suggested: “My guess is that he has already been spreading the false story and will be forced to contradict himself unless he lies in the speech.”
